Google Cultural Projects

Last year we recommended Google Art Project, which allows you to enjoy the greatest Landscape and Portrait paintings from the World's most celebrated galleries, zooming in to brush-stroke level (a must-see for our Fine Art students!).

Now Google have build on this success with their latest Cultural Heritage projects...:

Google World Wonders uses StreetView's functionality to let you virtually explore a wide range of sites of historical significance worldwide, including Kew Gardens and Stonehenge in the UK and the archaeological areas of Pompeii and the ancient Kyoto temples. In addition to man-made sites, you can explore natural places: wander the sandy dunes of Australia’s Shark Bay or gaze up at the rock domes of Yosemite National Park in California.

Or if your interest is in Living History, then try these online historical archives featuring letters, manuscripts, first-hand video testimonials and much more covering such events as Apartheid, WW2 or Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation.

Thre are also archives dedicated to the Dead Sea Scrolls and Nelson Mandela, with more to follow.
