Here's a free online alternative to check whether your work might be suspected of plagiarism, either because you have got your Referencing wrong, or because you have used too much material from other sources without including enough of your own analysis.
Simply go to the Paper Rater website, click on the Use Now Free button, and paste the different parts of your assignment into the relevant fields on the page (Title, Main Body, Works Cited - what we call Reference List in the UK). Select your Educational Level and Type of Paper from the drop-down menus, then change the Originality Detection option to "Include". Tick the "Terms of Service" box then click on Get Report.
Within seconds you'll see the analysis on screen. Click on Plagiarism Detection (the second option on the right of the screen) to view what percentage of your work derives from other sources - it even lists these sources for you. The options above and below this show the other ways that this website analyses your work, including Spelling, Grammar, Word Choice, even Style, which might help you when you are proofreading your work before handing it in. Click on the highlighted text of your work for more information and suggestions.
PLEASE NOTE
- This system is NOT as accurate as Turnitin (which itself is just a guide for staff) and by no means proves that your work is completely original.
- Since this is an American website, the spell-check reflects US spellings.
- The Grade is only notional and based purely on use of English, it takes no account of subject knowledge.
These caveats aside, Paper Rater does usefully help you self-evaluate your work, and can help you correct any errors and correctly use citations, before you submit it for formal assessment.
